Protest in Rome, Italy marks four-year anniversary of Kyoto Protocol implementation
Environmental campaigners in Rome dressed up as penguins to demand greater action over climate change today, February 16, February 16, four years after the Kyoto Protocol came into force. The landmark agreement was created a decade ago to stabilize CO2 emissions at 1990 levels. Since that time, more than 170 nations have ratified the agreement (the United States pulled out in 2001), however Kyoto never included major developing nations India, China and Brazil. Said one protestor:
We have great hopes. We hope that if the US will believe more strongly, other countries will do the same.
